I know that “******” and “Darkie” (or is it spelled Darky?) is considered a racial slur and very inappropriate.
Likewise “*****” is considered inappropriate when said by a Caucasian yet considered a synonym for “brotha” when said between two persons with dark pigmentation in their skin.

I disagree with the term ‘African American’ because it assumes that anyone with dark skin must be African in origin.

“White” seems to have become a racial slur for Caucasians (i.e. white trash, whitey, etc), so “Black”, being the opposite of white on the color spectrum, may also hold some of the same negative connotations.

My question is, What is/are the appropriate term(s) to use for people with dark pigmentation in their skin? that won’t get my head blown off downtown in the D (or anywhere else for that matter)?

Maikang Just don’t say it. There’s no need to describe that attribute, and if we all learned to ignore such trivial traits, we’d all get along a lot better.

A person who is Hispanic might prefer to descriptor “Latino,” but it’s always a good idea to ask.

A person of ***** descent is quite properly referred to as African-American. Whether the person knows of relatives from Africa is irrelevant, since it’s a descriptor, not a genealogy term. But of course, if the person is *****, or even if they are Hispanic and have dark features, the odds are extremely good that they have ancestry from Africa.

But my main idea is that you don’t HAVE TO say anything, so why bother?

And, yes, there are some wackos who are just looking for a chance to take your head off, so no matter what you say, they’ll find something to get offended about. Some people would rather be right than happy.skin analyzer

Stop it! No one is in any sort of dilemma in trying to describe A PERSON OF COLOR.
