4 months ago I brought my girl to the vet because she was losing hair, scratching, and had sores popping up all over on her skin (shih tzu).

It was, as far as the vet could tell, due to a deep-ear yeast infection (couldn’t smell it, or see evidence of it, but tape tests tested positive for yeast in the ears) that had turned into a secondary bacterial infection in the skin.

Anyway, the vet put her on a course of Prednisone and Cephexalen, and also had me bathe her with Ketskin analyzer artistryoChlore every other day for two weeks and then slowly wean it off.

Now there are quite suddenly sores popping up all over on her skin again, she’s scratching, losing hair. I called the vet to ask, and she said to start doing the KetoChlor every other day again.

What could this be????? Why did it come back? She doesn’t have fleas, she’s on an extremely high quality kibble. Twice I have given her 1/2 a tablet of Benedryl, (she is 10 lbs, so that’s the appropriate dosage) and it has shown to have no effect on the swelling, redness nor has it seemed to sooth her. Benedryl is supposed to help allergies right? So chances are this isn’t some kind of insane allergy??

So far only the KetoChlor seems to work. The vet says that if it doesn’t clear up we are going to have to put her on Cephexalen (antibiotic) again… probably some Prednisone too to make inflammation go away.

Please, if you have any ideas, shoot.

Maikang Go to the vet and ask for two things- a skin scraping (to rule out skin mites, mange, or dermatitis) and a full panel allergy test. Dogs can be allergic to anything that a person can be and sometimes Benadryl won’t fully help it. Could be grasses, protein in food (chicken, beef, turkey, sweet potato, etc). Could be cotton, silk, wool, cat dander, or even human skin.

If you don’t want to spring for the allergy test, first you can try switching to Natural Balance LID in one of the basic flavors. Cut the food down to one protein, one carbohydrate and start from there. Feed that, and only that for 2 weeks and see if it helps any.skin analyzer
