Shes a three legged mutt. Her mom was a chocolate lab, her dad was a lab collie (big black collie shaped dog with thick chow-type fur) Somehow, she turned out mostly white, with lab-type fur. She’s not albino though, ’cause her nose is black, and her eyes are brown.

Anyway… She’s really itchy all the time. I bathe her daily with sulfodene dog shampoo, she has no fleas at all. I’ve tried feeding her special food, and searched for any possible causes of allergies, including people food, and soaps, and everything else… I’ve moved twice, and that hasnt changed her condition. The only thing that seemed to help was cortizone shots that she got for her front leg amputation (she got stepped on by her mom when she was 3 days old… I had to bottle feed her and the whole bit…) I’ve tried oatmeal baths, and a million different kinds of sprays and lotions and all that crap… I’ve taken her camping for weeks at a time, and she dosent really get any betskin analyzer diorter then either…

Maikang Has the vet diagnosed her with anything?
My pup had Demodex mange, which is common in pups so the vet prescribed the Sulfa shampoo but it was only to be used 3 x per week at most…that actualy made mine itch a lot more so in the end my vet dipped her in mitaban.
If the dog is still a pup you might want to check for demodex mites but other than that you can always try benadril, call your vet for the correct dosage

As for the food thing, some dogs can have allergies to wheat and beef, try a natural food with no wheat or beef…or corn for that matter, Canidae is great….human grade, hollistic, natural and not too expensive :o)

The first thing I would do though is ease off the baths, dogs should be bathed once a month professionally or every 2 weeks if at home (thats just whats recommended, not my take)

Maikang I’m sorry. I don’t know how to answer. White dogs seem prone to skin problems. What her problem is, I don’t know. I would lay off the daily bathing. Maybe it is mange (which is a common mite that some dogs can’t cope with) Maybe it is autoimmune. What does the vet say?

Benadryl can be given to dogs at 1 1/2 times the dose that is appropriate for a human. Weigh the dog and see how much benadryl a human of that weight needs ( the pharmacist will tell you this over the phone). Divide that amount by 2. Add your answer to the original amount to get the correct dosage. I doubt you should use it daily to mask symptoms, but it sounds like you both need some relief.skin analyzer

Maikang When we brought our dog to the vet when he was younger, because he was itching so much, we were told he was allergic to the environment. I didn’t exactly know what that meant at the time. Well years later and and many pills,ointments, shots, and medicated baths later, oh and I forgot all the money spent. I mean thousands of dollars!! He now takes an allergy pill called Atopica. It use to be very expensive, but now they lowered it’s price, a little. These pills have helped him tremendously. Ask your vet about it. You might also want the vet to check to see if he has a low thyroid. This may also be the cause of the itching.skin analyzer

Maikang Dude, I have a part chow, part sheperd dog. She itched like hell all last summer. I gave her Advantix, and flea baths, medicated shampoos and nothing helped. Vet said I bathed her so much, her skin dried up and was irritated.

This summer, I’m not having her shaved so short. I’m bathing her when she really NEEDS it and keeping her fur a little longer but managable. Call your vet. Dogs don’t need baths every single day.skin analyzer

Maikang She could have anything from mange, to being washed too much, to allergies. Dogs can have allergies to anything including you, soap, food, laundry detergent, grass, ect. You really should take her to the vet to get checked out, they can do a skin scraping to see if she has any type od mange or anything like that, but they can also do allergy testing to see EXACTLY what she is allergic to. And I tell you they can be allergic to absolutely anything. Please take her to the vet and try to get her some relief from whatever is making her itch!!skin analyzer

Maikang Don’t bathe her so frequently. Natural oils within her coat need to work. Over bathing using “chemicals” may cause her body to produce less of these oils. Try only Once a week or Once a fortnight. Also if her coat is thick, try shaving it shorter for a while.skin analyzer

Maikang You could very well be bathing her too much & drying her out. No dog should be bathed that often.She can take Benadryl.1/2 mg per lb.every 8 hours. The cortizone shots you speak of, the vet will give them to your dog for itching / allergies.skin analyzer

Maikang use stronghold she may not have fleas but she could have an allergy to grass or something else this what i use and it works i always know when my dogs are due their stronghold because they start to itch you can get it from your vet,also molting can cause itching so try brushing her a couple of times a day it helps.skin analyzer

Maikang Wow, it really appears like you’ve tried a ton of stuff. Have you tried daily doses of benadryl? I have friends that have a boxer that is allergic to everything, has the vet checked her out? Although our friends vet can’t tell her what her dog is allergic to they have the dog on prednisone and benadryl. Sounds like that’s what your dog needs to be on.
