Hello! i have a Great Pyrenees, and i live in the suburbs of chicago. More this year than other years, i’m guessing because its colder this year, she is having a dry skin problem. i’ve read other questions on here, and i’m seeing alot of ‘give your dog a bath once a week,’ but that isn’t really an option for us. an 87 pound dog, tiny house, and cold outside, it just doesn’t support weekly baths for her. so is there something else i can do? like, i’ve heard to add olive oil to her diet, but how much? and i’ve also heard omega 3 vitamins, but again, how much? Thanks for your help!!

Maikang First I’d check with a vet to ensure that it is just dry skin, Dry skin can be a symptom to some diseases.

A dog should not be bathed more then once a month. Bathing too much strips the dogs skin of its natural oils which can cause dry skin and other issues. Don’t use any human shampoo it does the same thing and it contains harsh chemicals.

Omega’s do help for skin and coat. You can purchase fish oil from local pet stores. The bottle should tell you how much to give based by your dogs weight. It takes about 3 weeks to start see results.skin analyzer

Maikang Firstly weekly baths are only going to make the problem worse. Think when you wash your hands a lot, your hands get more dry right? Same idea. Once a month is usually the max you want to wash a dog.

Secondly, what are you feeding him? There might be other options for food that would give him better coat/skin quality.

Brushing is also supposed to bring out the natural oils in skin and coat, which helps with dry skin/dry coat.

I don’t have a lot of experience with supplements, but others will have better advice on that anyways.

ADD: I did a search on your dog food, this link I think is the food you’re referring to… all in all it’s rated 1 star out of 5, and has a lot of low quality fillers in it. You can give the link a read and get more details… I’m no expert but this site seems to have a lot of good information on dog food.

Maikang there is a company that makes this stuff called Fur Butter..which is suppose to moisturize your pets coat..might be worth a try.

Maikang Wash your dog only when they are dirty. They can clean themselves in between. When you do wash her use Johnson’s baby shampoo. if it persists call your vet.skin analyzer
