my dog is a small chow/tibetian spaniel, and on her back, she’s starting to loose her hair due to itching so bad, her skin is stating to turn blackish-red back there, and it’s starting to spread upwards. she also itches like crazy, i know it’s more than dry skin, i’v tried oatmeal baths, because that’s what a petstore told me to do, and i know she doesn’t have flees, she’s been checked very good, and i know it’s not just allergies. i think it’s some kind of skin irritation thing, and it makes her constantly smell bad and i keep giving her baths like i did today – by tuesday she will probably stink. and she’s an inside dog. does anyone know what kind of shampoo, or medicine i might can use? or a home remedy?

Maikang You’ll need to do a skin scraping at the vet to rule out mange and other serious skin conditions. It could also be a food allergy, what does she eat?

Give her .5ml of Benedryl per pound of body weight to cut down the itching for now. Try a stronger shampoo; oatmeal is really only effective on mild dry skin. Try tea tree oil or citrus shampoo instead. Scrub it in and let the shampoo soak for at least 15 minutes before rinsing. They have hot spot relief sprays you can buy as well.

Those are just temporary measures however, you need to figure out if it’s an external skin issue like mange, an internal issue like food allergies or a thyroid problem, etc. She’s going to need a vet.skin analyzer

Maikang Sounds like you need to take her to the vet- Chows commonly have skin problems- and bathing too often (even with oatmeal shampoo) only irritates the problem- You should see a vet- they can do a scraping of the skin to see what’s there- and give you a medicated shampoo.skin analyzer

Maikang No home remedies, take her to the vets! She sounds incredibly uncomfortable! Imagine being that itchy! What have you treated for fleas with, if it’s an over the counter thing then it’s probably not worked – go the the vets and get prescription products. It may very well be mange (just a guess as I can’t see or examine your dog) if you’re in the UK then go and get some ADVOCATE which will do fleas, mites and some worms.

Maikang The best thing I know for that is to give her oatmeal baths with oatmeal shampoo. Is that what you’re using? At the grooming shop I work at, we use something called Oxymed. It’s for dogs with irritated skin, and it seems to be pretty easy on them. Have you taken her to the vet? My schnauzer had really bad skin problems, but there really wasn’t a whole lot that could be done for her. That’s one thing that is really hard to fix is skin problems. Maikang 1st bathe her in oatmeal soap( you can get it at any pet store), then make an apointment to see the vet. The bath with soothe her for a short time, but she may have allergies or she may have a mite on her thats causing her to itch, either way the vet will get you something to stop the itch….

Maikang it could be vairous thing maybe there is something inside/outside affecting her skin or something.try going to petsmart or petco and ask them for an ointment or a cream then if it doesnt work if u havent already taken her to the vet then get her checked outskin analyzer
