All of the lighter people were the house n***** and the lighter women were raped by YOUR ancestors while the darker people worked the fields. Even today with movies, music everything. Maikang You know, being a darker skinned (not chocolate, more like a darker caramel) young African-American woman, I must say, that in many cases the lighter your skin, the more opportunities you have here. I think it has alot to do with the American standard, which is white. Since the beginning of modern American civilization, the lighter you were, the better you were treated. Light skinned blacks worked in better conditions (in the house) than darker skinned blacks. Now, people view light skin as more “friendly” and less “intimidating” than dark skin. This mindframe has spread from whites to blacks, even. I mean look at our rap videos: The majority of the video girls/main characters are light skinned with long, straight, flowing hair. People claim that this is more attractive than darker skinned ladies with short or kinky/curly hair. Most makeup is available in 12 different shades of tan but only 2 of brown, dark and darker. Even Ambi and Iman cosmetics, made by blacks primarily for blacks, have more light shades than dark. It’s a hot mess and I am stuck in the middle. I can’t find makeup in my shade at all. I always have to go a shade lighter or darker because I’m somewhere in the middle. But back to your question: I completely agree. Most of our famous entertainers are light, our doctors, lawyers, everyone is light or you see one or two dark ones. Good example: Has anyone noticed that many stars (black stars) get lighter as their career progress? Look at Beyonce’s first promo pic by herself and now look at the latest mag she’s been in… How about Mary J Blidge? some of our black women even look white now, they’ve gotten so light. Maikang All this does not make sense. Their are dark skinned toned people who make a lot more money than me. I;m light skinned. Also I have a less chance than making more money than all medium toned or dark toned because of the structure of the discrimination laws. I’m not favored when you match skin tone. Maikang Unfortunately I do agree with this study. Also back in the colonial periods there was often a hierarchy of society based strictly on skin tone. Often the lighter you were the higher on the system you were, the more opportunities you had and the more your family advanced. I believe this has affected us today because if you come from a family of wealth it is likely you are to be more successful and the cycle continues. watch the spanish soap operas. the main good characters are the tall european white skinned people, and the villans, maids etc are the shorter darker people. jlo and shakira look white. what about the black hispanics?
