our chow chow female, 6 years old, started to scratch and lick on her legs, back, and everywhere she can reach until the point that she pulled her hairs and get bold on spots. We took her to many Vets for analyzer and every one says a different thing: since fleas to hyperthyroidism, for which, she’s currently treated now. She got her wounds cured and stitched. Doctor did not perform a blood test due to he thinks the symptoms lead to hyperthyroidism: purple colored skin, weight gain, itching. Now as a normal person I would say let’s try a skin test to see if there’s any bacteria but doctors are difficult to advise you know what i mean.
In any case, our dog keeps skin analyzer koreaon scratching and licking herself like crazy so we had to put the elizabethian collar on her again, at least until her stitches are dry and wounds get better. No hopes though since she starts to scratch as soon as she can.
Is there any advise from chows with the same problem. I’d so appreciate your comments. Thanks.

Maikang Did the vet absolutely rule OUT anything? Flea bites aren’t going to happen if the dog has no fleas for instance. A bland diet to stop food allergies is always recommended, or going to a raw diet works too. Hyperthyroidism is easily diagnosed via a blood test–it’s either a yes or no. I fail to see why the vet wouldn’t do one!

Contact a chow breed rescue group and ask them about this, they’ll be very familiar with the skin problems of the breed.skin analyzer

Maikang Get the blood work done. No symptoms *lead* to Thyroid issues, but Thyroid issues can be the cause of the symptoms. Any Vet that I’ve dealt with in the last 35 years would have insisted to do blood work. I suggest you find another Vet. You can tell the Vet what you want done, including blood work and skin scrapings. It’s your money and your dog! Don’t be shy. God gave you a mouth for a reason! After all, it’s more money in his pocket and the dog deserves to have some relief from this issue.skin analyzer

Maikang My Dachshund is going through the same problem but i havent had to get any stitches, yet. I bought some stuff from Walmart called Sulfodene that seems to really help her itching. Its a liquid that you dab on the spots she scratches the most.

Maikang I had a terrier with horrible skin problems. When she turned about 6 she chewed and scratched herself like this. She had Hypothyroidism and the meds helped a little. We found what helped the most was shaving her, bathing her in Oatmeal shampoo, and spraying Emu Oil on her skin. You can get it from Tomlinson’s. I don’t know if they have those everywhere, but you can try PetsMart or Farmers Markets. Hope this helps and your dog feels better soon.skin analyzer

Maikang Start by shaving the hot spots,so you can treat them better. Give her a bath in oatmeal shampoo and rinse her well. Wait 3 days and put ADVANTAGE flea treatment on her, its the best, Also you can give Benadryl at 1 mg. per pound, every 4 to 6 hrs. A chow is similar to a smooth coat sharpei, they are also known to have alot of skin issues.skin analyzer

Maikang I know that doctors can be difficult to ask these questions to and to ask for tests but this is YOUR dog and YOUR money so I’d try another vet and see what that one says. Has anyone suggested allergies and allergy testing????

Maikang Sorry, yet Chows are not a reliable breed for first-time proprietors. Chow Chows are dominant, would properly be obdurate and hard to coach, and of direction their coat needs a great kind of artwork. i might seem someplace else for a established-time canines. reliable luck.skin analyzer

Maikang My best friend had this issue with her rat terrier. They actually used benadryl itching cream or hydrocotizone, I’m pretty sure her vet recommended it to her.. It helped soooo much, for a while at least. I would ask your vet first, but that may help stop the itching.skin analyzer
