To have control is something that many people strive for. For some people its control over their job or another person. In the book Wintergirls, by Laurie Halse Anderson, the protagonist’s desperate need was to control her body. Lia, thought that by gaining control of her body everything else in her life would fall into place. Her childhood was a disaster of broken promises, heartbreak and abandonment. Her body was really the only thing she could control. Not eating and cutting became a coping method for the trauma she had experienced. If her body was beautiful, then everything else would be to.

The death of her friend was what really pushed Lia over the edge. Throughout the novel readers come to discover that Cassie, her best friend, was really who introduced her to the idea of what beauty was. Since her parents were absent at their jobs she really had no mentor and latched onto her friends conclusion. They would make oaths and bets seeing who could be skinniest. Best friends are supposed to be there to support one another, and in their eyes that’s what they were doing, but in the end they became each other’s worst enemy. Their relationship was a nightmare and yet when Cassie died it took a toll on Lia. She had believed she was the only one who understood her and now she was gone. This started her downhill spiral and her skin analyzerbest friend ended up almost killing her.

Lia became addicted to controlling her body almost like a heroin addict becomes tied to the drug. It’s something that she needed to live her life normally. Any other behaviour she believed was irrational. When people take an Advil to get rid of a headache their ultimate hope is that the pain will go away. Lia had a lifetime of pain that she needed to deal with and one Advil wouldn’t help. Her eating disorder became like medicine. The one thing she had say over when everything else was going to hell. Her dad had an affair, her mom was never around, and her best friend died but she thought everything was okay because she could be skinny.

Cutting was something else she turned to. It served as a coping method because it focused the pain to a different place, a different kind of pain. When she moved in with her father he said the behaviour had to stop. “A daughter who forgets to eat, well that’s bad, but it was just a phase and I was over it. But a daughter who opens her own skin bag, wanting to let her shell fall to the ground so she can dance? That was just sick. No cutting Lia Marrigan Overbrook. Not under Daddy’s roof. Bottom Line. Deal breaker.” Her father’s perspective must have triggered feelings of guilt. She felt like she had failed everyone around her and disappointed them. She did not live up to the trophy daughter they wanted and felt she was a disgrace. The book constantly displays this by revealing her low self esteem thoughts through inserts between the normal story. She refers to herself as stupid, ugly, and fat. Her cutting was not only a coping mechanism but a cry for help. Her family did the best they could but maybe if she had been shown love and encouragement in response to her reaching out, her course could have been changed.

She stayed so strong against food all throughout the whole novel. It was her enemy and she truly believed that anything she ate would change her body for the worse. Lia was so strong in this fight that it actually convinced her mind she could not eat. Anorexia is a sickness. Just as lung cancer would destroy your lungs, anorexia destroys your brain. The disease tricked her into thinking that she had full control over herself, which is what she wanted, when in reality it is what actually controlled her.
