Causes of Dry Skin Around the Mouth

For some people, dry skin around the mouth is a chronic, ongoing condition. For others, it can pop up seemingly at random, even if the rest of their skin isn’t dry. Although the reasons can differ depending on the person (and it’s best to check with a dermatologist if the issue is persistent), here are some of the most common causes of dry skin around the mouth.

Perioral dermatitis: A condition that can resemble acne, this appears as red, raised bumps around the mouth that are accompanied by dry, scaly, sensitive skin. There are theories that the overuse of topical cortisone creams, fluoridated toothpaste, or heavy ointments or creams may be responsible.
Contact dermatitis: This occurs when something comes in direct contact with skin and spurs an irritation response. Ingredients such as fragrance, fragrant oils, mint, menthol (and its derivatives), citrus, , and drying alcohol can all lead to irritation and dryness, and are commonly used in around-the-mouth products like toothpaste, mouthwash, lipsticks, lip-plumping products, and lip balms.
Seborrheic dermatitis: More common in people with oily skin, this is caused by the overproduction of oil combined with irritation from a type of yeast that occurs naturally on skin. For some people, this yeast can result in dry, flaky skin. Since there are oil glands on the sides of the nose, this can result in the condition becoming apparent in areas close to nose, which of course includes the mouth.
Climate changes, lip licking, and certain medications: Changes in weather, such as very cold temperatures and dry or windy conditions can cause skin to become chapped and dry. Lip licking and drooling (while you sleep; yes, it happens to everyone from time to time) are other causes, since saliva can remove naturally-secreted oils in the mouth area that normally keep it moisturized. There are also certain medications (both topical and oral) that can lead to dry skin, such as some prescription acne medications like tretinoin and antibiotics like tetracycline.

Most of the people face this problem, during monsoon and winter season this problem increases. As dry skin becomes drier in these seasons, and troubles a lot. Recently few of my customers questioned me that I have a dark and dry skin around the mouth and it feels very bad as I can’t do make-up or wash my face again and again and I’m facing lots of problems?

The reason why this problem starts:-

1. The area around the mouth becomes dark and dry due to the hyper pigmentation of the skin around the mouth.

1. The gram flour mask will work well on dry and dark skin. Just mix 1 tsp of raw milk, 1 tsp of gram flour (besan), ½ tsp of turmeric powder. Apply this mask on dark skin around the mouth. Leave for 20 min. Then wash using plain water. The mask gives shine to the darkened skin.

2, The very easy and fast remedy for dark and dry skin is lemon juice. Mix ¼ of lemon juice and 1 tsp of honey or curds or you can mix both the ingredients. Apply this mask on dark areas around mouth then leave until it becomes dry then wash it using cold water.

3. Potatoes are best whitening agent. Apply and rub sliced potato on dry and dark skin around mouth then leave until it gets dry then wash it. Apply potatoes daily for about 15 days to get results.

4. As I have included this ingredient in most of my home remedies, yes you guessed right its Oatmeal. Mix 2 tsp of oatmeal and 2 tsp of tomato juice and add 1 tsp of curds. Then apply this mask on dark skin around the mouth. Leave for 15 min then wash with plain water. This mask will keep the dark area clean and helps to reduce darkness.

5. Almond oil also helps to get fair skin. Apply Almond oil or almond paste on the dark area around the mouth. Leave for 10-15 min then wash using cold water.

6. Homemade scrubs also help to lighten the dark areas. Apply the mixture of orange peel and curds and then gently rub this scrub around the mouth for about 5-10 min then leave for 2 min then wash it. This mask will help to reduce scars, and dark pigmentation around the mouth.

7. Milk cream also helps to get fair skin. Mix 2-3 tsp of milk cream and a pinch of turmeric powder then apply on dry and dark areas around mouth. Leave for 10 min then wash it using cold water. Apply this mask weekly thrice.

8. Dry green peas powder also work wonders on dark and dry skin. Mix 2 tsp of dry green peas, few drops of lemon juice, a pinch of turmeric powder, 1 tsp of olive oil, 2 tsp of honey and add milk or curds to make a thick paste like mask. Then apply this mask on dry and dark skin around mouth then leave for 15 min then wash it using normal water. Apply this mask daily and you can apply this mask on face or on pimples also.

9. Mix 2-3 tsp of olive oil, few drops of lemon juice and 2 tsp of honey then apply it on dark skin and gently massage for 5-6 min then leave for 10 min or overnight then wash it using face wash.

10. Egg work well on dark and acne marks. Mix egg yolk, honey and few drops of lemon juice then apply on dark skin around mouth leave until it gets dry then wash using cold water and face wash. You can use this mask on face also.

11. Keep the area around the mouth moisturized: Use a good moisturizer around the area, look for ingredients like vitamin E, jojoba oil, shea butter, etc. Since the skin around the mouth is ripped off moisture, it would be prudent if even oily skin could apply “suitable for very dry skin” moisturisers.

12. Keep yourself hydrated: Lack of hydration aggravates dry skin issues and we tend to consume less water and fluids during winters. Include at least 8 glasses in your routine and you would be able to see the changes.

13. Use a moisturizing lip balm: Smear your lips and the area around the mouth with lip balms with moisturizing properties and leave it overnight.
